From antiquity to the present day, numerous events have shaped the history. Historical places bring the past alive and show us important milestones on the way to modernity.

Acropolis

The Acropolis towers high above the Greek capital. Acropolis means nothing more than a castle hill or a fortification, almost every ancient Greek city had a corresponding building. The most famous acropolis is certainly the one in Athens. There were first settlements on the site of the historical building as early as the 14th century BC. It has experienced an eventful history and was repeatedly destroyed over time.

Tower

The Tower of London holds many mysteries and stories. Built by William the Conqueror, the fortress is closely linked to the British kingdom. The tower is well known as a prison and the well known personalities who were held here and some of whom were also executed. Among others, two of Henry VIII’s wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, lost their lives here.

Brandenburg Gate

The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II had the Brandenburg Gate built between as the Berlin city gate. In 1806, at the instigation of Napoleon, the Quadriga was dismantled and moved to France after the Prussians had lost the war against France. In 1814, after the wars of liberation, the work of art returned to its location.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum in Italy is the largest amphitheater in the world. Emperor Vespasian ordered the construction in 72 AD. The structure was opened just eight years later. The Colosseum could seat up to 60,000 spectators. The corridor and entrance developed at that time is still used today in the construction of stadiums. On the occasion of the opening, the citizens celebrated 100 days of bread and games, gladiator fights, animal hunts and sea battles were part of the entertainment.

Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is closely linked to French history. Until the revolution in 1789, the castle, which grew out of a small hunting lodge, was the main residence of the French kings and was a signature of absolutism.

Alhambra

The Alhambra in Spain, was built in the Moorish style in the 13th and 14th centuries. In pre-Roman times there were first settlements on the site of the huge castle. Mohammed I founded the Nasrid dynasty and had a citadel built. Over time, the building was constantly expanded and after the expulsion of the Moors, the Spanish kings took over the fortress.
